Description

This album of photo-mechanicals of "Old Houses, Doorways and Windows" was compiled by Eva R. Greeley, ca. 1919-1926. Thematically arranged, the album was created to study the evolution of American architecture, and Greeley's notes accompanying the illustrations give a sense of the state of the scholarship in the field in the early 1920s. The illustrations are taken from magazine and newspaper clippings, postcards, and other sources, and have been carefully dated by the compiler. It includes views of the Hancock House in Boston and many other important buildings in Eastern Massachusetts.
Greeley was an antique collector and an early membor of SPNEA, who operated a tea room from her home, Ledgemont Studio, in Abington, Massachusetts. This scrapbook was probably a part of her bequest to SPNEA, which came to the society at her death in 1939.
