Highlights of the furniture collection: While block front chests of drawers from Newport, Boston, and Connecticut are well known, examples made in Portsmouth are rare. This splendid chest is one of two Portsmouth-made block fronts in Historic New England's collections. Family legend holds that this chest originally belonged to Sir William Pepperrell of nearby Kittery, Maine.
