Description

This leather album contains twenty-two albument prints of portraits and buildings, all taken by Charles Austin Wood in 1896. An inscription in the front of the album reads, "Mrs. Mary Miranda (Corbett) Johnson with compliments of C. A. & M. M. Wood. Photographic Views taken by Chas. A. Wood in the 78th years of his age. April 1896."

The album includes portraits presumably of Charles and his wife Caroline E. Wilson Wood. It also includes images of buildings and sites connected with the Woods. Charles Wood was in real estate late in his career, and he was involved with many notable buildings in Boston, including the Hotel Vendome, the Minot Schoolhouse, and Wood's Block. He lived in Dorchester for many years. In 1870, he and his wife moved to Boston and lived at Chester Square and 504 Massachusetts Avenue on the corner of Tremont Street. This album includes beautifully detailed photographs of the interior of 504 Massachusetts Ave., illustrating late nineteenth century décor. See pages 13 and 15 for wallpaper.

Included with the album is a folder containing a letter dated April 10, 1895, from Charles and Caroline Wood's daughter, Mary, and her father to "Cousin Mary," a biography of Charles Austin Wood, and two "Yankee" magazine articles dated June and October 1997 about the Hotel Vendome fire.
