Description

It has been the subject of much debate as to who could rightfully claim the title of Father of American Painting. Research shows that the title could belong to Augustine Clement. Clement, who emigrated to New England in 1635, was certainly the only Painter-Stainer in the Massachusetts Bay colony. Sidney Gold looks at the scant details of Clement's life.
