Over the past two years, a Save America’s Treasures grant has allowed Historic New England staff to address moisture infiltration at Beauport, Sleeper-McCann House. Projects include window conservation, chimney repairs, and wood shingle roof replacement. In concert with these projects, our conservation team has been periodically called upon to move collections objects out of harm’s way.
While moving and covering objects for protection, the conservators have brought small, often overlooked objects with condition problems to the conservation lab for treatment. The extraordinary array of artifacts at Beauport makes for fun and challenging treatment work. Unique objects range from a shell-covered jewelry box (pictured) to a small lacquer jar, to oversized and miniature leather bound books and ceramics. Henry Davis Sleeper’s eclectic collections at Beauport will keep conservators at Historic New England busy for years to come.
