When the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) animal transport truck rolled down the lane on May 5, there was a welcoming party to greet it. When the doors opened, and Big Dave and Little Romeo stepped off, a cheer went up. Dave and Romeo first came to the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm last summer, as part of the Foster Farm program with the MSPCA. They spent the summer rooting, playing, napping in the sun, and entertaining visitors with their ebullient personalities and silly antics. Come fall, however, the pigs had to be returned to the MSPCA Nevins Farm facility as there was no winterized shelter at the farm for them. Thanks to the generosity of carpenter and boatwright Carl Panall and Son, a shed has been built for the pigs that will keep them cozy year-round, and the community has stepped in once again to feed and care for these big boys, a tall order indeed as Big Dave weighs in at about 400 pounds, and Little Romeo, not so little any more, is a svelte 250 pounds and growing.
