Seeking an experienced preservation tradesperson to provide leadership, direction, and mentoring to Historic New England’s preservation carpentry crew and trades training program.

Location: Lyman Estate, Waltham, Mass.

Description: The carpentry supervisor will provide smooth, efficient, and cost effective management of the preservation carpentry crew in support of the care of the historic properties in the Historic New England collection.  This position will directly manage the carpentry crew, which performs a combination of maintenance repairs and preservation projects at the sites, and personally develops and performs work projects themselves. The position plays a critical role in the organization by consulting on conditions at the sites, developing treatment proposals, performing or assigning work, documenting all phases of work in an appropriate manner and demonstrating in all actions a commitment to long-term preservation and maintenance of Historic New England resources. This position also is responsible for mentoring staff carpenters as well as supporting the work of Historic New England to train the next generation of craftspeople through a variety of programs and initiatives.

Qualifications: The candidate must have the skills and knowledge to develop, manage and complete a range of preservation carpentry projects. The ideal candidate has at least six years job-related experience in a lead position and understands historic construction and repair techniques. Requires the use of email systems as well as competency with MS Word and Excel spreadsheets. Must be able to operate effectively in a team environment, where communication within and among the teams is essential to success. Ability to interact and communicate orally and in writing is essential. Requires problem solving skills and ability to effectively plan and implement work processes to complete tasks accordingly.

Preferred Qualifications: Degree or equivalent course work in historic preservation, architectural conservation, historic trades, or a related field. Knowledge and understanding of current OSHA guidelines relating to construction work. Weekend and evening work periodically required through planned activities or due to emergency response.

This position is based at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Mass. and requires regular travel to Historic New England properties. Requires a valid driver’s license and a means of transportation.
