Location: Lyman Estate, Waltham, Mass.
Description: Historic New England is looking for an energetic self-starter to oversee our expanding functions operation. The Functions Manager is responsible for the management and marketing of the functions rental business for Historic New England, with emphasis on the Lyman Estate, Codman Estate Carriage House, Hamilton House grounds, and Eustis Estate. The position is responsible for meeting approved budget goals and for maximizing income earned through the rental of specified buildings and grounds while working within Historic New England’s preservation philosophy and practices. Responsible for supervising functions staff including hiring, training, and managing performance to meet approved financial and program goals and objectives. Ensures excellent planning, execution, and staffing of all events. Works with Historic New England’s marketing team to develop and implement marketing plans in order to meet or exceed goals set by the organization. Actively promotes and sells Historic New England locations for private events, including weddings, corporate events, and private parties. Develops and monitors annual budgets and oversees the preparation of rental contracts, confirmation letters, caterer contracts, and other documents.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, hospitality, or related field. Four years of job-related experience, preferably in hotel, catering, venue, or restaurant sales. Professional experience and proven track record in selling, planning, organizing, and executing social and corporate events. Experience supervising staff. Must be a self-starter, energetic, results-driven, and goal-oriented. Requires ability and desire to work with the public with high standards for customer service. Requires exceptional verbal and written communication skills, and strong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, internet, and email. A high level of flexibility is required, including the ability to work weekend and evening hours. A valid driver’s license and means of transportation are required.
Work Environment: This is a salaried exempt position with a minimum commitment of forty hours per week, flexibly scheduled, with weekend and evening work frequently required. The position is based at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts, but requires regular travel to other locations in Lincoln and Milton, Massachusetts, and South Berwick, Maine, and other sites with functions rental operations. As typically performed, this position regularly involves talking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. The position also involves lifting up to fifty pounds. The employee must perform functions including basic keyboarding and electronic and paper database/file management. The position also requires constantly reading documents for general understanding.
