Amongst Friends: Sarah Orne Jewett and Her World
In this program, students explore the creative side of the past through the life and work of writer Sarah Orne Jewett and her wide circle of artist friends. Like Jewett and her friends, students take inspiration from their surroundings, both natural and built, to create their own works of art.
The program includes a pre-visit lesson in the classroom that introduces students to Jewett's life and work. They will create a hand-bound journal to use for note-taking and sketching while on their field trip.
During their time at the Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum, students discover the objects and people who were most important to Jewett and how her life in South Berwick influenced her writing. They become artists, designing and creating a piece of painted pottery to bring home.
