Upon founding the Society for the Preservation of New
England Antiquities, now known as Historic New England, William Sumner Appleton introduced a journal to share
important information on the preservation of the region's history. Since 1910, Old-Time
New England has been devoted to the description and interpretation of the
architecture, landscapes, and material culture of New England.
Old-Time New England features
illustrated essays that focus on the material evidence of the region's social
history, craftsmanship, and daily life. Articles describe the way New
Englanders have constructed and altered urban and rural buildings, artifacts,
and landscapes, and how, why, and in what ways they have sought to document and
preserve them.
In each issue, a photographic essay, "Inside
Historic New England," focuses on collections that suggest new avenues for research. The
only fully-illustrated journal on the region, Old-Time New England is
aimed at both general readers and scholars interested in New England history.
