Mining SPNEA's Photograph Collection

Pomegranate Publishing, producers of high-quality greeting cards, calendars, journals, posters, postcards, and books, recently joined the family of Historic New England licensees. Katie Burke, the president of the California-based firm, visited the SPNEA Library and Archives last year and spent time poring through photographs, architectural drawings, original art work, and ephemera. She was awed by the scope of what she found and immediately recognized the collection's potential for reproduction.

As a result of her visit and subsequent discussions, Pomegranate suggested two projects for collaboration that are currently in production. The first is a book of postcards of historic photographs of Boston, containing images of the city and its inhabitants from the 1880s to the early twentieth century. The book will contain thirty oversized, sepia-toned postcards, with views of historic landmarks, architectural monuments, and city life by such well-known and important photographers as Baldwin Coolidge, Henry Peabody, and Nathaniel Stebbins, that can be torn out for use. Some of the subjects depicted are the State House, Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, a swan boat in the Public Garden, Louisburg Square, Faneuil Hall, the Quincy Market, Old South Meeting House, Paul Revere House, Monument Square on Bunker Hill, the U.S.S. Constitution, and street scenes from Back Bay to Washington Street.

The second project is a handsome 2004 calendar entitled "Historic Homes of New England," which showcases SPNEA's properties. It will contain twenty-five full-color photographs of SPNEA's house museums, farms, and landscapes in all seasons of the year. Each month provides a look at a different style of exterior architecture and a view of an interior space reflecting the lifestyle of those who lived within. Both the postcard book and the calendar will be available late this summer.
