Windmills
Windmills have been an important feature of the landscape since the late eighteenth century. This windmill uses the power of wind to pump water from an eighty-foot well. Gravity sends the water through underground pipes to watering outlets around the farm. The wooden tank at the base of the windmill holds 2,000 gallons most of which is used to water livestock. A single cow drinks an average of ten gallons during a summer day. Water for the vegetable garden comes from the same source. The strong winds that blow across Conanicut Island make windmills an economical means of pumping water, and today, the community is looking into windmills for generating electricity.
