Sheep for wool

As visitors follow the farm roads to the bay, they pass the farm flock of sheep. The farmers use electrified netting to control the grazing by the sheep and to protect them from predators. The sheep are also managed intensely and moved twice a day to prevent overgrazing and to give the forage a “rest." The sheep are sheared once a year on Sheep Shearing Day, held in May on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The public is invited to this annual event. After shearing, the wool is skirted, packed into large bags and shipped to a mill where it is washed, carded, spun, and woven into the “Conanicut Island Wool Blanket.”
