Flora
Species: Turkey, Born 2009 Breed: Broad Breasted White The Broad Breasted White is commercially the most widely-used breed of domesticated turkey. These birds have greatly enlarged breasts and shorter legs than older breed turkeys. They produce more breast meat and their pin feathers are less visible when the carcass is dressed due to their white color. These properties have made the breed the most common on factory farms. Flora’s toes are permanently curved because the distribution of weight on a broad-breasted white is disproportionately forward because of their large chests, and their toes are not strong enough to support their weight. Flora is kept well-exercised and given lots of fresh leafy greens to minimize her genetic predisposition to gain weight rapidly. Flora is friendly, but she is often curious of shinny objects such as a button or a brightly colored jacket and may reach out to explore it. She is kind and sweet, however, and loves to “talk” with children.
