James Rundlet displays a distinct interest in technology. The house is outfitted with the latest tools for both cooking and heating techniques, as displayed by this complete Rumford Roaster and Range. Although the designs for this system had not yet been published in the United States in 1807, Rundlet included them in the building plans. The system included a roaster, which allowed the user to control heat and moisture like never before; a shallow firebox for controlled heat and efficient fuel consumption; a small bake oven for the same reasons; and the steam table, which contains three stew holes with their own separate firebox and ash pit. All of the cooking fires were vented through a sophisticated hood, which led the smoke up the chimney stack to a smoke room on the third floor.
