Clubs on Stephen Willard Phillips' desk
The library reflects Stephen’s interest in history and collecting. There are many bronzes and Chinese export porcelain pieces here. The books mostly relate to the history of Salem, Hawaii, and Pacific explorers such as Captain Cook. Stephen Willard was known to dominate conversations with visitors and enjoyed bantering about current events, philosophy, and history. In a letter to a friend in 1945, he stated, “You never get too old to cease to enjoy…to discuss some unimportant point in history with one of your old cronies who holds an entirely different view on the subject which you regard as erroneous.”
