The library was a room frequented by Stephen Willard Phillips as an office during the day and a place to relax with friends in the evening. An interesting feature in the room is the Gothic bookcase. These were one of Rantoul’s additions to the house and were used to display a portion of Stephen Willard’s large book collection. Stephen Willard enjoyed studying many aspects of history and literature. One of his biggest passions was the study of oceanic objects and peoples. Stephen Willard’s father, Stephen Henry Phillips, was the first attorney general to the kingdom of Hawaii. Stephen Willard was born in Hawaii in 1873.
