The Phillips House history begins in 1802 in Danvers. Elias Hasket Derby, one of America's first self-made millionaires from the sea trade, left his farmland in Danvers to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Captain Nathaniel West when he died in 1799. They built an estate named “Oak Hill” on the property. In 1806, the Wests bitterly divorced, resulting in the expulsion of Captain Nathaniel West from the property. After Elizabeth died in 1814, the house was left to her three daughters. When one of the daughters died without any children in 1819, West inherited one-third of the estate. In September of 1820 he moved four rooms to 34 Chestnut Street in Salem. He added connecting hallways, bedrooms on the third floor, and a kitchen ell.
