Domestic staff bedrooms were typically simple with inexpensive furnishings. However, by providing pleasant and comfortable bedrooms, upper-class families were better able to retain good domestic help. The Phillips servants had very long tenures, with Delia Cawley and Catherine Shaughnessy staying with the family for forty years. The family’s cook, Bridget Durkin, who was with the family from 1919 until her death in 1925, would have slept in this room.
