Parlor
According to the family’s social calendars, the Phillipses entertained two or three times per week. A prominent family needed a parlor to entertain friends and family and to showcase the finest furniture, art, and objects. Here, men and women would gather for tea in the afternoon or perhaps a cocktail before dinner. The parlor is one of the original four rooms from Oak Hill. The fireplace may be able to be attributed to Samuel McIntire, a well-known architect of the Colonial style, and the designer of many features in the Oak Hill estate. Above the fireplace is a painting of Venice by the American impressionist artist Hermann Dudley Murphy.
