Dining room
The dining room was originally the kitchen before the Doanes’ 1900 renovation. A kitchen and butler’s pantry were added to the adjacent ell. French doors that open onto a wraparound veranda were also added c. 1900. As remembered by a family member, the veranda afforded breathtaking views of the Housatonic River and the rolling mountains beyond. Vipont and Edward Merwin were accomplished horsemen and golfers, collecting trophies from competitions in the 1920s and early 1930s. Some of these prizes are part of the Merwin House collection and are on display.
