Hall fireplace

The original fireplace in this hall would have been larger still (this one dates from the mid-eighteenth century). Because of the size of the fireplaces, people tend to think that cooking was done over a roaring blaze. Actually, there would have been several small fires with various pots suspended over them - your early three or four-burner stove. The bake oven is on the side. Earlier ones were at the back and later ones were on the front.
