"The handsomest place in America"

John Codman expanded the Codman Estate and used this as his country seat from 1767 to 1803. Influenced by the picturesque views, productive farmland, and ornamental gardens that he saw on estates in England, John Codman made improvements to the farm’s agricultural productivity, separated the property’s ornamental landscapes, and installed the invisible retaining wall known as the “ha-ha” wall. His enhancements impressed wealthy sophisticate Rebecca Gore, the wife of the Massachusetts governor, who proclaimed the Codman Estate “the handsomest place in America.”
