Rear lean-to

Arnold’s large size allowed for a separate kitchen or cooking space, unlike many of the smaller stone ender examples where the Great Room was used for cooking. This fireplace is the deepest in the house and originally had a bake oven which was removed because it was thought to threaten the integrity of the chimney. In this room there is evidence of stylistic upgrading that was not removed during the restoration to seventeenth-century appearance (e.g., sash windows, added staircase, and plaster covered walls), although the fireplace has been restored to its original size.
