Modern History of Dairy Farming
The State of Connecticut has lost forty dairy farms in the past five years alone, a dramatic shift that has gone largely undocumented. In 2009, Historic New England partnered with The Farmer’s Cow, a local Connecticut dairy cooperative, to tell the story of modern dairy farming in Connecticut. This project brought together oral histories from The Farmer’s Cow farmers and historic and contemporary photographs in a traveling exhibition highlighting the dramatic changes in American agriculture during the last century – from mechanization and consolidation to more recent interest and emphasis on local farms and farm products. These historical facts and trends are interwoven with the stories of the people and families who bring us one of our most important food staples. During the summer and fall of 2010 the exhibition, Farmers, Cows, and the Land: A Story of Modern Dairying, was presented in the carriage barn of Roseland Cottage.
