Boston Marriage in Historical Context: Sarah Orne Jewett and Annie Fields
Wednesday, March 7, 6:30 p.m. reception, 7:00 p.m. lectureOtis House, 141 Cambridge Street, Boston, Mass.
$10
Used frequently in New England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the term Boston Marriage described a female couple living together without a man’s financial support. This simple definition, however, belies what was often a complex and loving, supportive long-term relationship. Dr. Libby Bischof, a cultural historian with research interests in the fellowship and collaboration of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century artists and writers, will shed light on what Boston Marriages were and the particular historical context in which they existed. Bischof will focus special attention on the well-know relationship between Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett and famed Boston hostess Annie Adams Fields.
This program is a partnership with the History Project as part of Historic New England’s 100 Years, 100 Communities initiative. Attendees will receive a complimentary ticket for a tour of the Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick, Maine.
