The House of the Seven Gables Settlement House in Salem, Massachusetts, was founded in 1909 by Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist, preservationist, and founding member of Historic New England. The ambitious goal of the settlement house was to assist immigrant families settling in Salem. Still in operation, “The Gables” has helped thousands of people through its mission focused on education, preservation, and community service. This project collected the voices of those who participated in and operated the organization's programs. Now over one hundred years old, the stories of this venerable organization and the people who were and are a part of it will be preserved in the archives of Historic New England.
