neoclassical

Neoclassicism was a reaction to the excessive flourish of the Rococo style of the early 1700's. The archaeological discoveries of classical sites Pompeii and Herculaneum provided the basis for the vocabulary of ornament. Such ornamental motifs include the anthemion, palmette, vase or urn, scrolling foliage, candelabra forms, arabesques, swags and classical or mythological figures.
