Description

The Codman Family Manuscripts Collection is a major resource for the study of New England family history, domestic relationships, changing patterns of taste and consumption, mercantile and shipping activities, and the evolution of the Codman country estate, named The Grange, from the late-eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Members of the Codman family conscientiously retained and painstakingly preserved documents and artifacts of their own and previous generations to create this vast assemblage. The papers of twenty-six individuals make up the collection. The archive includes correspondence, financial and legal records, diaries, literary documents, maps, drawings, and scrapbooks. The collection includes approximately 2,000 architectural drawings created by Ogden Codman, Jr., for clients in New York, Newport, Boston, and elsewhere in the 1890s and early 1900s. One of the many highlights of the Codman family papers is the correspondence between author Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman, Jr. Wharton and Codman shared a close friendship and co-authored the influential work, "The Decoration of Houses".

Arrangement

The Codman Family Manuscripts Collection is an aggregation of collections. The papers of each individual member are organized into its own sub-group. In turn, each subgroup is arranged in a set standard series: correspondence, diaries, financial records, legal records, literary papers, maps and drawings, printed matter, and scrapbooks. As needed, series are further subdivided into subseries, based on the volume and contents of the materials, which are ordered by time period or topical area.
