Preserving the Written Word

Historic New England's rare book collection includes:

  • English, American, Italian, and French architectural books of the seventeenth through late nineteenth century
  • American builders’ guides, house pattern books, and decorating manuals from the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
  • works on landscape architecture

Our reference collection includes works on architecture, furniture and decorative arts, domestic life, New England material culture, art history, photography, historic preservation, transportation, and industry. Local histories and biographies, genealogies, and diaries that relate to New England figures and families round out the collection.

Our periodical literature, which dates from the nineteenth century to the present, focuses on architecture and design, decorative arts, household management, historic preservation, and local history.
