album # 287
GUSN-322953
A photographic album (disassembled by donor) documents locations in Massachusetts and Maine during the late 1880s. This album of 112 pages with black and white images of various sizes, but mostly 8 1/4 x 6 1/8 contains images of historic homes (both exterior and interior views) in Malden, Boston, Walpole, Marshfield, Nantasket Beach, and Lexington. The album also documents Brant hunting on Monomoy Island (Cape Cod) and hunting in Maine including hunting camps, lumber camps, and photos of hunting shanties as well as groups of hunters. Of particular interest is the photograph of a group of individuals acting as "Mrs. Jarley's Wax Works". This humorous play was published in 1873. Mrs. Jarley, a character form Dickens" The Old Curisoity Shop", is a proprietor of a travelling "Wax Works" show. Performances of "Wax Works", where life-size wax figures depected famous people, were popular. There were many performances of this play during the late 19th century. See articles in attached folder.
Also of note in this album are the two pictures of the Bussey Bridge train disaster on March 14, 1887 in Roslindale, Massachusetts. Articles describing this horrible disaster are included with the album.
The three photographs of children are notable for their dress and the one including a doll carriage with doll.
