This subseries includes a small collection of literary papers. Sarah "Sally" Sayward Barrell was born in 1759 to Sarah and Nathaniel Barrell. She was the author of four novels and one collection of stories and is renowned as Maine's first novelist. In 1778, she married Richard Keating, with whom she had two daughters and a son. Her first husband died in 1783 and she remained a widow until 1804 when she married General Abiel Wood and moved to Wiscasset, Maine. After her second husband died, she moved first to New York and later Kennebunk, where she died in 1855.
