From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: This painting was bought by James Bowdoin Bradlee at an auction held in 1871 of the contents of the Deacon House, one of the most elegant houses in Boston's South End. Many of its furnishings and even some of its panelling had been brought from France. Ogden Codman, Jr. remembered this painting in the dining room of his grandparents' house and was particularly anxious to acquire it when it became available after the death of one of his aunts.
