Label
From "A Family Collects: Paintings and Sculpture from the Codman House," Concord Museum, 1993-1994: Ogden Codman traded one of the paintings he inherited from his father for this spirited genre scene depicting the ancient custom of the Egg Dance. The challenge of this ritual was not to break the egg. Until recent conservation revealed the monogram "JM" in the lower left corner, this painting was thought to be the work of Molenaer's contemporary, Adriaen van Ostade, who specialized in paintings of groups of people in cluttered interiors.
