TD & S[B] = Thomas Danforth Boardman and Sherman Boardman. Working in Hartford, Conn in 19th-century. (The pre-eminent American pewters of the 1800s.)

David, thank you so much for letting us know about the makers of this piece. I looked at the mug and compared its mark to the ones for Thomas and Sherman Boardman published in Kerfoot's American Pewter. You're absolutely right. Although the mark on this piece is missing the final B, it clearly is the same one used by the Boardman brothers. The information has been updated and will appear online tomorrow. It's through the helpful information of people like you that we learn about our collections. Thank you again.

there's been some more work since Kerfoot (1924) on pewter marks. Suggest using Laughlin, Pewter in America for ID's and moving Kerfoot into storage (after reading his brilliant introduction!).

We have Laughlin but Kerfoot was closer to hand. I'll make sure to reach for Laughlin first next time. Thanks again David. Nancy
