Walk Right In 11/98-3/99 About 1800, patent leather--a heavily varnished waterproof leather--was introduced in England. Made in the United States by 1822, this new material was often used for fashionable men's riding boots. These boots are of such high quality that textile historican specualtes that they might been purchased by the owner at the 1853 New York Exhibition.
