Needlework Coat of Arms

1985.660 (RS103941)

Description

This embroidered polychrome Cheever family coat of arms depicts a helmet with a stag's head crest couped. Feather scrolls surround the shield with one rosette at lower left and two at upper right. The shield is elaborately worked and divided by a saw-toothed diagonal line into fields of silver and green. This armorial crest is typical of the work of John and Samuel Gore. Worked in silk and metallic threads on a black silk satin ground, the crest retains its original mahogany frame.
