Label
"Cherished Possessions": In the colonial period one way to ensure good standing in the community was to support the local church. This pewter basin, probably used for baptisms, was a legacy to the Third Church of Christ in Lynn, Massachusetts, from Theophilus Burrill, a respected citizen active in the militia, the General Court, and the Governor's Council. Upon his death in 1737, he left funds to not one, but three local churches. <br/>
