The top of the drawing is a frontal view of the entire school building, seated on rust-colored clouds as if watching over the floor plan from heaven. Historical/Biographical Note

The floor plan comes with a description of "modern school, Fontainebleau School of Art." Also known as L'Ecole des Beaux Arts at Fontainebleau, the schools at Fontainebleau combined arts in the areas of music, architecture, and design. Founded in 1923, the school at the historic Chateau Fontainbleau excelled in music and the fine arts. In 1931, the American Conservatory was merged into the school. Providing exclusive training in franco-american inspired beaux-arts, Fontainebleau became a prestigious architectural school for students around the world.

Crandall's drawing is dated July 12, 1931. The American Fontainebleau sessions, which continue to be 4 week long summer learning programs, hold a variety of seminars, classes and trips to view architecture. Because of its establishment in 1931, Crandall was more than likely part of the first session of American students accepted into Fontainebleau.
