Scrapbook -- Chairs, Chests, Beds, Tables, Mantels, Interiors

CC010.004.015 (RS226948)

Untitled scrapbook. Scrapbook has black fabric covers secured with a black twill tape running through six eyeliets. Paper label is affixed to front cover; however, no inscription is visible. Scrapbook contains 110 pages, 52 of which are blank. The materials in this scrapbook document chairs, chests, beds, tables, mantels, and interiors. There is no table of contents. The bulk of the materials are clippings from periodicals and catalogs. Some of the catalog clippings list the price of the furniture. While most of the furniture depicted dates from the 18th to early 20th centuries, earlier pieces and modern reproductions are also included. Other items depicted in the book include: coffers, pianos, Chinese screens, electric fittings, mantelpieces, clocks, cradles, urns, tankards, busts, clocks, incense burners, teapots, vases, plates, statues, and flower pots. Room interiors and outdoor scenes of pergolas and gardens are also included. Most pieces are unlabeled and undated; however, identified interiors include: the Hotel Elton (Waterbury, CT), the Waldorf-Astoria (New York, NY), and Plaza Hotel (New York, NY). One page contains a sketch on trace of a chair and a photomechanical print of a chair designed by Francis Bacon for A. H. Davenport Co. Another page has a design rendered in watercolor. Digital images of these two pages are attached to this record.
