Description

Series XIX, Coffin family: photographic material, ca.1839, undated (#1.1-1.19, 1 vertical file folder), contains card photographs, black and white photographs, stereographs, and a lithograph. Most of the card photographs and stereographs are scenes of the White Mountains in New Hampshire (including the Flume and Franconia Notch) taken by such photographers as B.W. Kilburn, John P. Soule, F.G. Weller, and the Kilburn Brothers. Photographs of Colorado and Wyoming include a cattle roundup in Cheyenne, Wyoming; two donkeys in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and a scene of the Punch Bowl in Glen Eyrie, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also included in the series is a scene of Frost Rock at Rye Beach in New Hampshire; scenes of Mt. Shaw at Ossipee Mountain Park in Moultonborough, New Hampshire; other scenes of Maine and New Hampshire; an unidentified farm house; and an unidentified women in a black dress on a beach. Among the other stereographs are scenes of Dr. Mason's house, Silver Springs, in Orange, New Jersey; a winter scene of Niagara Falls in New York; and a Victorian picnic. A black and white photograph of the Coffin ancestral home of Portledge Manor in Devonshire, England, United Kingdom and of Mrs. Pine Coffin (dates unknown) standing at the gate of Portledge Manor are also included. Likewise, a lithograph of the "Siamese Twins," Chang and Eng Bunker (1811-1874) is contained within the series.
