Description

Two fragments of neoclassical wallpaper found lining a trunk from Monmouth, Maine. Large-scale pattern of foliate swags and floral sprays. The swags enclose three pastoral vignettes. Visible in these fragments are a shepherdess holding a crook [Fragment A] and a group of sheep [Fragment B]. Missing is the third vignette, two cows by a tree. Block-printed in white and black with blue and gray-green stenciling on pink ground. Laid paper, partial sheets. Possibly an American version of a French pattern. Reproduced as "Monmouth" by Waterhouse Wallhangings in the 1970s.
