Description

Fragment of oatmeal paper from the F. Holland Day House in Norwood, Massachusetts. The back of the paper is imprinted with an Arts and Crafts style floral pattern of blue morning glory and yellow chrysanthemums among swirling green foliage. Block-printed in blue, green and yellow on light green ground. The pattern has been reproduced as "Priory Garden" by J. R. Burrows & Company, Rockland, Mass.

"The closet had an oatmeal type paper on over the / plaster everywhere except between some shelving. / Under that was some kind of paper so I investigated / and found I could remove the top layer and except / a round the edges it is just fine... For you I have enclosed the piece of oatmeal / paper as I took it off. It shows the nice morning / glory and chrysanthemum pattern of the underneath / paper." (Excerpted from letter from Margaret H. "The cost to-day for reproduction of the design found on / the reverse side of oatmeal paper from closet in the Day / House in Norwood, Mass. would be three hundred (300) dollars / for the art work, and fifteen (15) dollars for the finished / roll, each." (Letter of reply from Dorothy Waterhouse to Margaret H. Holmes dated January 28, 1970. Reiterates contents of Holmes original letter and gives quote to reproduce the floral pattern.)
