Description

Of rectangular format, of a landscape with large trees and rolling hills. On the banks of a pond is a rectangular tomb with an urn on top, adorned with a garland of roses. A cactus plant is on the forground rocks. It is possible that the gold frame with rope molding is original. [see photo neg.#47514-A]

Inscriptions
In ink on the urn in the image (in caps) is written: IN MEMORY OF MR. JOHN COGSWELL. Who died 30 Jany 1818 AE 80 yrs. [Note: the month appears to have been corrected; a white square of pigment & black filled in month contrast with the buff ground & brown ink of the rest of the inscription.] On the back, upper right corner, is a red bordered jelly label- written in black ballpoint is: Loaned by Mr. and Mrs./Bertram K./Little . On the back, lower right, on a red bordered jelly label- written in blue fountain pen is: John Cogswell Cabinetmaker/Born Ipswich 1738,/lived in Boston. Son/of Francis, and nephew of Jonathan, who built/ ""Cogswell's Grant.""
