Outrigger Canoe Model

2006.44.3692A-C (RS173051)

Description

Wooden model of a Hawaiian single-hulled outrigger canoe (wa'a kuakahi) (a), with a steering oar (possibly) (b) and paddle (c). Both the canoe and steering oar are painted black and yellow. It is likely that the outrigger float, or ama, fell off at some point. The outrigger is an important vessel in Hawaii and came in different sizes designed for fishing, trade and war. This model has "Honolulu" faintly painted on the bow and "Aloha" on the stern. The model was made as a souvenir item for the tourist trade.
