Woven Fan

2006.44.3679 (RS171057)

Description

Woven leaf fan with handle from Hawaii, with the words "Miss Harris" written across the top of one side. Traditional weaving techniques were used to create the spreading zigzag pattern. The edges of the fan are bound with a dark brown leaf and a thin, flat checkerboard patterned woven strip of black and natural colored fibers. The handle is tightly wrapped in a twisted thread made of natural fiber. The is fan probably an early and fine example of a souvenir made for the tourist trade.
