Photograph album 77

Description

This is an unusually flashy album. The decoration seems to be more the point of the album than the photographs inside. The cover has a raised pattern of deer made of wood. On the inside back cover is a music box (not working now). There is a dedication to "Lizzie C. Atkins, Boston 1869" on the first page. An index on two loose sheets in the front of the album lists sitters and subjects. Many of these are not portraits but commercial cartes de visite. A few are drawings with humorous captions. Other cartes de visite are from Ireland, Scotland, London, Germany, Rome and Paris and were probably bought on a trip. There are some prints of sculpture and paintings. There are also portraits of royalty and famous people, such as the singer Adelina Patti.
