Jacob's Vision

Painting of a man laying down to sleep wearing a robe and cape. His face is turned towards the stairs that go up into the clouds in the background. In the clouds are figures with wings on them. There are a few figures at the top, but are not colored. Three figures wear robes and are barefoot.


"Jacob's Vision. / And he dreamed & behold a ladder set upon the earth, & the top of it reached to heaven: & behold the / angels of God ascending & descending on it Gen. Ch XXVIII. ver. 12 / Publish'd Dec. 1 1800, by I. Hindon. No. 44, top of Well Street, Oxford Strt. London" (printed)
"RARE OLD PAINTING / on GLASS. / These were very common in the / early nineteenth century and / the good ones were generally framed / as this one in a brass frame. The / print from which it was taken was / made in 1800 which is probably / when the picture was made. It is / a sort of transfer process painting / a print on glass. Then almost / scraping it off and then adding / paint to the back. / There were four of these all of / biblical subjects in the old / Duncan House in Haverhill. / This one probably the best came to / my mother and after death / I took it. It has probaqbly been / in our family well over a century / and a quarter. / Stephen W. Phillips / Salem, Oct. 1928" (handwritten)
There is an elaborate book on this subject / "The Story of Old England Glass Pictures 1690-1810" / by H.G. Clarke. / Lord, 1928, paid 72 shillings." (handwritten)
