From the description, this sounds like a sidesaddle. If the leaping horn (leg support) is on the left the lady is riding on the near side, if it it on the right she is riding on the off side. The lady would wear a riding habit and hat and gloves and would carry a riding crop which is longer than the more commonly familiar (astride) riding crop.
