Description

Text below the illustration reads "View of the interior of the Coliseum, St. James Park, the scene on the opening day, June 15 during the singing of the grand chorus 'Glory be to God on high,' from a sketch by our special artist. Published gratuitously as a supplement to no. 717 of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper." The National Peace Jubilee was a music festival held June 15-19, 1869 in Boston to commemorate the end of the Civil War. The Boston Coliseum, which housed the event, was designed by William Preston and intended to be a temporary structure. The event was organized by composer and bandmaster Patrick Gilmore.
